Can the chainsaw be used as a handheld chainsaw (without the pole)?

No, it is one, cohesive unit with the pole.

Can any other attachments be used on the pole?

Yes, only the WA0308 hedge trimmer attachment is compatible with the pole. The WG252 pole hedge trimmer utilizes the same pole that is a part of the WG349. The chainsaw attachment is also sold separately as WA0307.
