Admittedly a brushless motor might not seem as exciting as some features, such as a cordless leaf blower that can produce gusts greater than 400 cfm and up to 125 mph, or a power cleaner with six times the water pressure of a garden hose. But, the brushless motor is one of the most important advancements in power tools in more than a generation, and here’s why:
In a traditional electric motor there’s a spinning armature that contains an electromagnet. To allow the motor to spin 360°, there are two brushes that press against the sides of the armature. (The “brushes” aren’t really brushes at all, but small blocks of carbon.) This arrangement works fine, but brushes wear out and the friction they create produces a lot of sparking, noise, and excessive heat, which can shorten the life of the motor.
In a brushless motor, there are no brushes of any kind. Instead, an onboard computer controls a series of transistors that charge the electromagnet as the motor turns. There are many advantages of a brushless motor including: no brushes to wear out, longer motor life, the motor runs much quieter and cooler, and there’s no electrical sparking. Plus—and this is important—a brushless motor increases the lifetime and runtime of a cordless tool up to 50% longer than a comparable brushed motor. That means you can get more work done in between battery charges.
