Do Robotic Mowers Work?

Are Robotic Lawn Mowers Worth Buying Over a Landscaping Service?

If you sift through social media feeds on robotic mowers, you might run into some cynicism.

“Great, another reason for this generation to be lazy.”

Or…

“Won’t handle my yard.”

And even…

“So, you eliminated the human.”

For the record, Worx doesn’t plan to eliminate humans. DIY is in our DNA, after all. We just want to make it easier for you to focus on the important things like family, friends, and making important memories.

Benefits of robotic grass mowing are obvious

Robot mower owners, per a My Take 2023 survey, get more than 2 hours of time back every week.
Help you avoid the treachery of August outdoor chores.
The same My Take survey shows that people also get to focus on other chores around the home.
It also helps them save money (62%).

Of course, robotic lawn mower owners are likely referencing cost savings from not having to hire a landscape crew.

Dollars and Sense

But here’s the reality: most people who bought a robotic mower, were actually in the market for an electric push mower, according to a 2023 survey.

This is interesting since robotic mowers cost more than push mowers. PC Mag reports that most units start out at $1,000 and go to $5,000. Sticker shock? Maybe. But Angi’s list shows that the national range for residential landscaping services costs about $3,500 annually.

But whatever the break-even point is for the robot grass mower owner, the fact is they see this as the next step toward home automation. Sure, the cost of landscaping services tends to be more inclusive—leaf pick up, fertilizer, other pre-grass conditioning—but you can see how a robot mower can pay for itself in two seasons.

But does the mower work?

The short answer: yes. And yes.

And remember, frequent cutting is the healthiest way to maintain a lawn, according to the Center for Turfgrass Science at Rutgers University (more on this in future posts).

3 Things to Understand

1. Robot mowers like Landroid or Landroid Vision don’t cut down 8-inch brush. Rather they are maintenance machines, meant for everyday use. Think of them more like a running pool filter that is constantly managing the water.
2. You have to cut down the grass initially to kick off the growing season.
3. Landroid and Landroid Vision are limited to slopes of 30 degrees or more.

The good news is Worx has been making residential robotic mowers longer than nearly any manufacturer in the industry, and now with the New Worx Landroid Vision, you can leverage its artificially intelligent neural network to a smarter, consistent cut that doesn’t require the installation of a boundary wire. Take a look at Worx Landroid Vision below!
