Good Vibrations: Worx Oscillating Tools

Need to sand, cut, polish, grind, trim, clean, edge, scrape, or drill a wide range of materials—such as wood, plastic, metal, drywall, tile, and grout? Grab a Worx oscillating multitool and get to work!

What Exactly is an Oscillating Tool Anyway?

Why are they called oscillating tools? Because they oscillate, of course! What this means is they move back-and-forth (sideways) at super-high speeds (such as 20,000 OPM or oscillations per minute). When it’s oscillating in full force, you might describe it as a vibration type of movement. After all, the amount of movement (oscillation angle) is only a few degrees. The reason you want one of these, though, is because it can literally take the place of a dozen other use-specific tools. Versatility is the name of the game with oscillating multitools.

A good oscillating tool can be outfitted with a wide array of attachments to do all sorts of repair, home improvement, and other DIY tasks. For example, while reciprocating saws can make plunge cuts, they’re more ideal for demolition than precision work. An oscillating tool with a cutting blade attached is perfect for accurate plunge cuts in walls and ceilings to install lights, switches, and power outlets. An oscillating tool also delivers better targeted control than belt sanders or random orbital sanders to effortlessly sand small or hard-to-reach surfaces, such as those on furniture. Worx has applied its innovative designs to this great lineup of oscillating multi-tools, including a pair of electric (corded) models and a pair of cordless, battery-powered models.

Electric (Corded) Oscillating Tools

If you don’t need to take your oscillating tool on the go because you mostly use it around the house or in a home workshop, you can get more power from a corded model. Worx has two models of corded oscillating tools for you to consider:

2.5 Amp Oscillating Multi-Tool with Clip-in Wrench (WX686L): This handy compact multi-tool features a universal fit system so it can accept attachments from other brands. The clip-in blade wrench stored right on the tool is always available for easy quick blade changes. It also has variable speed control ranging from 11,000 to 20,000 OPM so you can dial back for more delicate jobs. And with its oscillation angle of 3.2º, you get plenty of work out of each movement. The 6.5-foot cord means you get the reach you need without using an extension cord. It comes with one end cut blade for wood, a sanding pad, and three sanding sheets (80# Grit, 120# Grit, 180# Grit).

3.5 Amp Sonicrafter Corded Oscillating Multi-Tool (WX687L): The high-power motor in this model allows you to maintain the speed of cut even under a demanding load. It also features a 4º oscillation angle that results in 3x faster cutting than tools with the standard 3.2º angle. For even more convenience, rely on the tool-free Hyperlock clamping system to eliminates accessory slippage and the built-in LED light to illuminate your work area for better visibility. Variable speed control from 11,000 to 20,000 OPM lets you adjust for the task at hand. This model comes with a wood-cutting blade, rigid scraper, sanding pad, 26 assorted sanding sheets (10 coarse, 8 medium, and 8 fine grit), and a handy carry bag.

Cordless (Battery-Operated) Oscillating Tools

If you want the convenience and portability of a cordless, battery-operated oscillating multitool, you’ll want to check out the following two Worx models:

20V Power Share Sonicrafter Oscillating Multi-Tool (WX696L): This is the cordless counterpart to the WX686L, meaning it has the same universal fit system, on-tool blade wrench storage, and variable speed control (5,000–18,000 OPM with an oscillation angle of 3.6º). It also has an LED light to better illuminate work areas for greater precision. This model comes with an end cut blade for wood, a sanding pad, and an assortment of 20 sanding sheets. And it runs on the 20V Power Share battery that can be used on the huge selection of tools in the Power Share family.

Nitro 20V Power Share Cordless Oscillating Multi-Tool with Brushless Motor (WX697L): As the cordless cousin of WX687L, this battery-operated multitool has the 4° oscillation angle that maximizes control for cutting metal and other tough materials while maintaining an extend blade life. Tool also features the universal fit system for accessories from all major brands, the tool-free Hyperlock clamping system to hold blades securely in place, the LED light for better visibility and accuracy, and the variable speed control (8,000–18,000 OPM). This tool works with the 20V Power Share batteries you use with your other Worx cordless tools. The super-efficient brushless motor runs 50% longer, is 25% more powerful, and has 10X longer life than tools with regular motors.
